Therapeutic endoscopy

Author/s: Dr. Javier Nebreda

Therapeutic colonoscopy consists in the application of different treatments through the colonoscope. The most common procedures are:

– Polypectomy.

– Mucosectomy.

– Management of lower digestive bleeding.

– Treatment of sigmoid volvulus.

We will be covering endoscopic polypectomy for the resection of polyps in any phase and mucosectomy in certain cases of cancer in very early stages (“in situ”).

For the resection of polyps, we use loop-shaped electrical scalpels that embrace the base of the polyp; strangling it. The polyp, is cut by means of electrical currents.
